The NCOH awards a number of travel grants to PhD students of NCOH Partners selected to present their abstract at an international One Health-related academic conference.
The second Annual Scientific Meeting on May 30, 2018 has been a great success. Prevention and control of infectious diseases outbreaks are important societal challenges that require an integrated and balanced perspective in which human, veterinary, wildlife, and environmental elements and considerations are integrated. This One Health perspective was the overarching subject of the meeting.
Six leading researchers received the NWO Spinoza Prize and the Stevin Prize today from Ingrid van Engelshoven, Minister of Education, Culture and Science. The prizes are the highest distinctions in Dutch science. Cell biologist Anna Akhmanova, biophysicist Marileen Dogterom, social psychologist Carsten de Dreu, historian Beatrice de Graaf, virologist Marion Koopmans and microbiologist John van der Oost revealed how they plan to use the research grant of 2.5 million euros per person during the festive ceremony.
On 28 May, the RIVM published a report on the current state of knowledge about bacteriophages. The RIVM study was commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport after publications in the media about phage therapy. Since the television broadcast Dokters van Morgen, microbiologist Marc Bonten of the UMC Utrecht is regularly confronted with patients who demand treatment with bacteriophages. “I receive weekly mails from patients who request it, and in one case someone has also demanded such treatment.”
The Netherlands Antibiotic Development Platform (NADP) launched a novel funding opportunity during the NADP Voucher Event on 22 May 2018. The NADP Vouchers will support researchers and small- or medium-sized enterprises to bring their novel antibiotics and alternatives a step closer to the clinic.
