NCOH webinar 19 November – Silent pandemic: Antimicrobial Resistance

In the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week the Netherlands Centre of One Health organises a webinar about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the silent pandemic.

As the Covid-19 pandemic ploughs on, a slower-acting pandemic may follow closely behind. Prior to the emergence of the novel coronavirus, the development of antibiotic resistance – in which infectious diseases become resistant to our arsenal of antibiotics – was referred to as the ‘silent pandemic’. Today, antibiotic-resistant infections cause 700,000 deaths per year. The World Health Organization estimates this figure will rise to 10 million per year by 2050 at current trajectories. The number of resistant infections is growing worldwide. That is why it is so important to accelerate research and development of new antibiotics and alternatives.

Date & Time: 19 November 15:00 – 16:00 (CET)
Location: Zoom.

This NCOH webinar takes place in the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW). The aim of this week is to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

Speakers webinar ‘Silent pandemic: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)’:

  • Prof. Nathaniel Martin, University Leiden – The Guanidino Lipoglycopeptides: Novel Glycopeptide Antibiotics with Best-in-Class Potential
  • Prof. Jan-Willem Veening, University of Lausanne – Fighting the spread of antibiotic resistance with bacterial competence inhibitors
  • Prof. Suzan Rooijakkers, UMC Utrecht, Exploring antibody therapies for bacterial infections

Moderator: Maarten Hoek – Communication manager NCOH

This webinar is organised together with the Netherlands Antibiotic Development Platform (NADP). NADP facilitates the collaboration between public and private organisations, to enhance the development of new antibiotics and alternative therapies for infectious diseases in humans and animals.
