The NCOH awards a number of travel grants to PhD students of NCOH Partners selected to present their abstract at an international One Health-related academic conference. Through this grant, the NCOH wishes to support the PhD-related research of its members and stimulate the international dimension of its platform.
Financial support
Travel grants are awarded for short-term international conference visits. We provide a maximum contribution of €750,- to cover registration fee, travel expenses, and accommodation costs. Meals are not eligible for reimbursement. Seven to eight grants will be awarded yearly.
Who can apply
The NCOH awards travel grants to PhD students who perform their project at one of the NCOH Partner institutes. The applicant’s project must be related to One Health research and one of the four NCOH Strategic Research Themes. In addition, the applicant’s research must be presented (oral presentation) at the conference. Due to limited budget, applicants can only be awarded the NCOH Travel Grant once.
When to apply
Applications may be submitted at any time, after receipt the submitted abstract is selected for presentation and at least one month before the planned date of departure. Selection procedures will take place six times a year, i.e., per 1 January, 1 March, 1 May, 1 July, 1 September, and 1 November.
If the selection timeline is not fitting your conference’s timeline, please discuss with m.t.pronk@uu.nl whether submission is possible regardless of these selection dates.
How to apply
The application for an NCOH Travel Grant consists of four parts:
- Motivation letter (in English, max. 1 A4), including full conference or course information, why attendance is important for the applicant’s research, relevance to One Health research and NCOH Strategic Research Themes, and whether and which other organizations or institutes have been approached for funding;
- Abstract of the presentation together with a copy of the confirmation of the presentation (letter or e-mail) with the applicant’s name clearly listed as a presenter or performer;
- Signed recommendation letter from the Principle Investigator supervising the PhD project;
- A budget of the eligible expenses.
All application materials (as a single pdf) should be submitted electronically to m.t.pronk@uu.nl.
Selection procedure
The main criterion for approval or rejection of an application is the scientific quality of the application and relevance to NCOH research, reflected by the applicant’s abstract and motivation letter.
Once the application is received, it is carefully examined by representatives of the NCOH Executive Board, and a decision will take four weeks maximally. Once the decision is reached, the NCOH will inform the applicant.
Please note that, due to the large number of applications, reasons for approval or rejection cannot be given.
Reimbursement
Upon awarding of the grant, the applicant will receive the reimbursement only after the conference visit and upon presenting evidence of expenses and presentation. The presentation should include a statement of support through the NCOH Travel Grant. Grant recipients must collect and submit copies of their receipts and bank statements (pdf) and presentation (pdf) for reimbursement within 30 days of the meeting. The reimbursement will not exceed the total amount of the submitted receipts, with a maximum of €750,-.
