Missed the NCOH webinar about aerosols? Watch the recording here

In the upcoming months NCOH will be hosting a series of scientific lectures on COVID-19, with a special focus on the One Health approach to current challenges. The second webinar about aerosols took place on 3 September. If you missed it, below you can find access to the full webinar recording and the presentation slides. The topic of the next NCOH-webinar is Immunity and will be held on 1 October. You can register here.

Aerosols are hot. What makes these tiny droplets so complex?

Airborne transmission is defined as the spread of an infectious agent through the dissemination of droplet nuclei (aerosols) that remain infectious while suspended in the air. They can spread over large distances and may remain infectious for extended periods of time.

Scientists have been actively discussing whether SARS-CoV-2 may also be able to spread through aerosols in the absence of aerosol generating procedures, particularly in indoor settings with poor ventilation or during certain medical procedures that are known to generate aerosols.

Hence, the topic of the next NCOH-webinar was about aerosols, and particularly about the complexity in research.

Programme

15:00 Opening by Marc Bonten, NCOH Scientific Director AMR
Collection of infectious aerosolized respiratory viruses from the air (PDF)

Sander Herfst PhD, Viroscience department Erasmus MC

Little is known about the transmission kinetics of respiratory viruses, especially via the air. Optimized air sampling techniques that quantify infectious virus in the air are indispensable in order to improve intervention strategies to prevent spreading of respiratory viruses. Different air sampling methods and their efficiencies will be discussed.

Measuring SARS-CoV-2 in the air: experience from studies in mink farms and a slaughterhouse (PDF)

Lidwien Smit PhD, Utrecht University, Institute for Risk Assesment Sciences (IRAS)

Air measurements in and around mink barns (related to public health) and in a slaughterhouse with a COVID-19 cluster (cool environment).

Prevention of SARS-CoV-2 transmission by aerosols in hospitals (PDF)

Karin Ellen Veldkamp PhD, LUMC, Head of Infection Prevention

The topics in the presentation of Karen Ellen are: the risk of transmission, definitions of droplet & airborne transmission, infectious aerosol generating procedures and precautions to prevent transmission in hospital.

15:40 Panel discussion

The next NCOH webinar will be on 1 October. You can register now!

The next webinar will be about Immunity, about antibodies and vaccines. Time & date: 1 October, 15:00 – 16:00 h. You can register here.
