In 2019 worldwide 1 in 4 deaths is due to an infectious disease. In addition to the big 3 – HIV, malaria and tuberculosis – this mainly concerns respiratory infections, infectious diarrhea and sepsis. In the Netherlands, too, the burden of disease due to infections remains high.
In order to cope with these threats, it is good to consider the emergence of new and the threat of old infectious diseases. Joost Wiersinga (Amsterdam UMC), Marion Koopmans (Erasmus MC) en Jaap van Dissel RIVM and LUMC) wrote in an article published in the the Dutch Journal of Medicine (‘Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde’) what we can learn from the past decades and why new infections keep appearing.
