Avian flu viruses a continuous and present risk

Large-scale poultry farming are a hotbed for bird flu viruses. It is time to radically rethink poultry farming.

According to Prof. Thijs Kuiken from Erasmus MC, one particular strand named H5N8 is the one to watch: “We see that H5N8 keeps mutating and is successfully adapting to circulation in wild bird populations. Once it succeeds, we will have a very hard time keeping the virus out of our poultry farming”.
